Bound By A Common Thread

It is hard to think of the women in our past who have quilted for so many years out of necessity.  It was often using bits of fabric left over from one project or another.  The first quilt I ever made was a hand-turned appliqued quilt.  The fabric was given to me by my husband's Grandmother.  She handed me fabric cut into different shapes and told me to turn under all the edges.  I had no idea why but I did what she instructed.  If turning was not done to her liking, it was done over again.  I have learned so much from Grandma Hope and the many other women quilters in my life.  What really stuck with me though is that as I was sewing my first quilt and sharing my accomplishments with family, some said they recognize the fabric from projects they had done years earlier.  My mother-in-law said that one fabric was from a blouse she made in high school.  The quilting we do may not be out of necessity as it once was, but the bond between quilters is as strong as it ever was.  We are all bound by a common thread.
